The comment “and they wonder why they get bashed” really annoys me. Not only is it excusing (condoning?) racially motivated violence but it’s more evidence of this mindset that a nation’s symbols are untouchable by others (or at least those perceived as being others). I mean, what would this person think if they saw a Southern Cross tattoo on someone with dark skin?
Fact is, we issue licenses to slaughter kangaroos, our national icon is viewed as a pest (which I think says a lot about the way Australians view the natural environment). An Indian talking about eating a kangaroo (as a metaphor for defeating the Australian team?) though is apparently too much for some people, as if the Indian is provoking a race war.
